Getting a Suit Made in Bangkok: What You Should Know Before Choosing a Tailor

Bangkok has long been known as a destination for custom tailoring.

Walk through Sukhumvit, Silom or many of the city’s major hotel districts and you will find no shortage of tailors promising custom suits, thousands of fabrics and remarkably fast turnaround times.

For a visitor, that creates a different problem:

How do you know which Bangkok tailor to choose?

A good suit is not simply about selecting a fabric and providing a few measurements. The quality of the finished garment depends on the consultation, pattern, construction, fittings, alterations and, importantly, the person interpreting how the garment should fit you.

If you’re considering having a suit made while visiting Bangkok, here are some things worth knowing before placing an order.

Don’t Choose a Tailor on Price Alone

Bangkok tailoring exists at almost every price point.

That does not mean the most expensive suit will automatically be the best, nor does it mean the cheapest offer represents good value.

When comparing prices, find out what you’re actually being quoted for.

Ask about the fabric composition, construction, number of fittings, alterations and what happens if the finished garment needs further adjustment.

Two suits advertised at very different prices may not actually be comparable products.

Compare what is being made, not simply the number on the price tag.

Be Careful With the “24-Hour Suit”

Can a suit be produced very quickly in Bangkok?

Yes.

Should speed be the only consideration?

Probably not.

A major advantage of having clothing made in Bangkok is the relatively fast turnaround compared with traditional bespoke tailoring in many other cities. But fittings remain an important part of the process.

A first fitting allows the tailor to see things that measurements alone cannot fully communicate: your posture, shoulder balance, how the jacket sits when buttoned and how the trousers fall when you move.

Further adjustments allow the silhouette to be refined.

If you’re visiting Bangkok specifically to have clothing made, giving your tailor several days rather than several hours generally creates more opportunity to refine the garment.

At Der Herr Bespoke, we normally recommend allowing approximately 5–7 days, including fittings, whenever a client’s schedule permits.

Know What You Want the Suit For

A business suit for London shouldn’t necessarily be made the same way as a suit you plan to wear regularly in Bangkok.

Tell your tailor where you live, when you’ll wear the suit and what you usually feel comfortable in.

For warmer climates, for example, lightweight wool, linen and other breathable fabrics may be worth considering. For business or year-round international wear, you may want something more versatile.

The fabric should suit your life — not simply look good in a swatch.

Don’t Underestimate the Fitting

Measurements provide the starting point. The fitting is where you begin seeing how the suit actually sits on your body.

This is the time to look at the overall silhouette: the jacket, sleeves, waist, trousers and how everything feels when you move.

And speak up.

If you prefer more room in your trousers, a softer jacket or a particular length, tell your tailor. A custom garment should reflect how you like to dress.

Don’t Get Carried Away With Customisation

When you’re having a suit made, it’s tempting to customise everything.

Linings, buttons, lapels, pockets, stitching, monograms — there are plenty of choices.

But more details don’t necessarily make a better suit.

Start with the things that matter most: fabric, fit, proportion and comfort.

Then add personal details where they make sense.

Think Beyond This One Suit

If you find a tailor you trust, ask what happens after you leave Bangkok.

At Der Herr, we keep our clients’ measurements and order information on file, making it easier for returning and overseas clients to order again in the future.

So, Is Bangkok a Good Place to Have a Suit Made?

It can be.

The combination of fabric selection, customisation and relatively quick turnaround makes Bangkok an interesting destination for tailoring — particularly if you give yourself enough time to enjoy the process rather than rushing through it.

If you’re visiting Bangkok, take the opportunity to explore your options, ask questions and find a tailor whose style and approach feel right for you.
