Loro Piana vs Zegna: Which Fabric Is Right for Your Suit?

When choosing a fabric for a bespoke suit, two names often stand out: Loro Piana and Zegna.

Both Italian houses are renowned for producing some of the world’s finest fabrics and have long been favourites among those looking for exceptional wool, cashmere and luxury blends. But when presented with both options, a common question we hear is:

Which is better: Loro Piana or Zegna?

The answer is not as simple as choosing one over the other. The right fabric depends on how you intend to wear your suit, the climate you live in and the characteristics you value most.

At Der Herr Bespoke, we believe the mill is only the beginning. The weight, weave, composition and performance of the individual cloth are ultimately what determine whether it is right for you.

Loro Piana: Refined Luxury and Exceptional Feel

Founded in Italy, Loro Piana has become synonymous with exceptional natural fibres and beautifully refined fabrics.

Its collections range from fine wools and cashmere to linen, silk and sophisticated blends. Many Loro Piana fabrics are particularly appreciated for their softness, elegant drape and luxurious handle.

For bespoke tailoring, this makes Loro Piana an excellent choice when the feel and refinement of the cloth are an important part of the garment.

Depending on the collection, Loro Piana can be particularly suited to:

  • Special-occasion and wedding suits
  • Luxury business suits
  • Sport coats and jackets
  • Lightweight tailoring
  • Wool, silk and linen blends
  • Cashmere jackets and overcoats

Collections such as Zelander® also demonstrate the breadth of Loro Piana’s offering, with wool used across sophisticated tailoring and blended with fibres such as silk for additional character.

Zegna: Performance Meets Italian Elegance

Zegna’s history as a wool mill dates back to 1910, and its expertise in textiles remains an important part of the house today.

Its tailoring fabrics range from versatile Merino wools to exceptionally fine luxury cloths.

One well-known example is Trofeo, produced using superfine Australian Merino wool. The long wool fibres provide natural elasticity while creating a smooth, refined finish.

At the more luxurious end is 15milmil15, made from exceptionally fine wool fibres averaging approximately 15 microns in diameter. The result is an exceptionally soft and lightweight cloth.

Zegna also produces High Performance™ wool, designed with qualities particularly useful for men who travel frequently, including breathability, lightness and resistance to wrinkling.

Depending on the collection, Zegna is an excellent option for:

  • Business suits
  • Everyday professional tailoring
  • Travel suits
  • Lightweight suits
  • Formal and occasion wear
  • Fine luxury tailoring

Loro Piana vs Zegna: What’s the Difference?

It is tempting to compare the two names as though every Loro Piana fabric shares one set of characteristics and every Zegna fabric another.

In reality, that isn’t how fine suiting cloth works.

Both mills produce extensive collections with different weights, compositions, weaves and purposes. A lightweight Loro Piana wool should not necessarily be compared with a heavier Zegna cloth simply because of the name on the bunch.

A better comparison considers the individual fabric.

For a Business Suit

For a suit that will be worn regularly, we generally look for a fabric that balances refinement with practicality.

The cloth should drape well, retain its shape and be comfortable enough to wear throughout the working day.

Both Loro Piana and Zegna offer excellent choices. The best option will depend on how frequently you wear the suit, where you wear it and the finish you prefer.

For Hot Weather

If you live in Bangkok, Singapore, Dubai or another warm climate, choosing the right construction, weave and fabric weight becomes particularly important.

A famous mill name alone does not make a suit suitable for hot weather.

We generally recommend looking towards lightweight and breathable fabrics, particularly tropical and lightweight wools, as well as linen and selected wool-linen-silk blends.

The objective is simple: maintain the elegance and drape of a tailored garment without making it unnecessarily heavy.

For Frequent Travel

For someone regularly travelling for business, practicality becomes more important.

A fabric that recovers well from sitting, packing and long journeys can often be a better choice than simply selecting the finest cloth available.

This is where performance-oriented fabrics, including Zegna’s High Performance™ wool, can be particularly interesting.

For Weddings and Special Occasions

For a wedding or special occasion, you have more freedom to prioritise texture, softness and visual character.

Fine wools from either mill are excellent choices, while blends incorporating silk, linen or cashmere can introduce additional depth and personality.

Loro Piana is particularly interesting here because of the variety of luxurious natural-fibre blends available across its collections.

Is Loro Piana Better Than Zegna?

Not necessarily—and Zegna isn’t simply better than Loro Piana either.

Both produce exceptional fabrics.

Instead of asking which brand is better, we recommend asking:

Which specific fabric is better for the suit I want to make?

A client looking for a lightweight business suit in Bangkok has very different requirements from someone commissioning a winter suit for London or a tuxedo for a wedding in New York.

Even within the same mill, we may recommend completely different fabrics for those three clients.

How to Choose the Right Suit Fabric

When selecting cloth for a bespoke suit, consider five things:

Climate — Where will you wear the garment?

Purpose — Is it for business, travel, a wedding or everyday wear?

Frequency — Will you wear it once a month or several times a week?

Weight and weave — How breathable, structured or resilient does the cloth need to be?

Personal preference — Do you prefer a soft, luxurious handle or something with slightly more structure?

These factors often matter more than the name printed on the fabric book.
