Beyond the Suit: Why Every Man Needs a Sports Jacket

For many men, tailoring begins with a suit. It is often the first piece commissioned for work, a wedding or an important occasion. But as the way we dress has become more relaxed, there is another piece that has quietly become one of the most useful garments in a man’s wardrobe: the sports jacket.

Less formal than a suit but considerably more refined than dressing without a jacket, a well-made sports jacket occupies the space in between. It can be worn to work, to dinner, while travelling or simply when the occasion calls for looking put together without feeling overdressed.

At Der Herr, it is often one of the pieces we recommend as a client begins to build a wardrobe beyond the essential suits.

What Makes a Sports Jacket Different?

A sports jacket is designed to be worn as a separate rather than as part of a matching suit.

That distinction gives it considerably more freedom.

Where a suit often calls for a smoother, more formal cloth, sports jackets allow us to explore texture, colour and pattern. Hopsacks, textured wools, linen, cashmere and wool-silk-linen blends can all bring character to a jacket without making it difficult to wear.

The construction can also be approached differently. A softer shoulder and lighter structure can create a more relaxed silhouette while retaining the clean lines and proportions of good tailoring.

The result should feel natural rather than formal — something you can put on without having to think too much about it.

The Jacket You Will Probably Wear the Most

The greatest strength of a sports jacket is its versatility.

The same jacket can be worn with tailored wool trousers and a crisp shirt for a business setting, then paired with chinos or denim for a more relaxed evening.

Remove the tie. Open the collar. Wear it over a polo or lightweight knit. Change the trousers and shoes, and the character of the jacket changes with them.

This is why we often find that clients who commission their first good sports jacket return for another. Once the fit and versatility become part of their everyday wardrobe, there are surprisingly few occasions where it does not work.

Choosing Your First Sports Jacket

For a first jacket, versatility should come before novelty.

Navy is difficult to beat. Depending on the cloth, it can be dressed up with grey wool trousers or worn casually with beige chinos and denim. Rather than choosing a completely flat navy, we often recommend introducing some texture through the weave. It gives the jacket depth and helps distinguish it from the jacket of a navy suit.

Brown, taupe and earthy tones are equally useful, particularly for men whose wardrobes already contain plenty of navy and grey.

The important question is not simply, Which fabric looks best?

It is Where are you going to wear it?

A client’s profession, climate, travel, existing wardrobe and personal style should all influence the answer. The most beautiful cloth is of little value if the finished jacket spends most of its life in the wardrobe.

Fabric Changes Everything

A sports jacket is one of the best places to appreciate what fabric can do.

A lightweight open-weave wool can create a clean jacket suitable for warmer climates. Linen brings natural texture and a more relaxed character. Wool, silk and linen blends can provide depth and visual interest while remaining light. Cashmere and softer woolens create an entirely different jacket for cooler weather.

For clients living in Bangkok or other warm climates, breathability becomes particularly important. Lightweight cloth and thoughtful construction can make the difference between a jacket that looks good on a hanger and one you genuinely enjoy wearing.

For clients who travel frequently, the conversation changes again. A wardrobe may need jackets that work across different climates, pack well and move comfortably between business and leisure.

This is where selecting cloth becomes more than choosing a colour or pattern.

Fit Should Feel Natural

Because a sports jacket is intended to be worn frequently, comfort is as important as appearance.

The shoulder should sit naturally. The jacket should follow the body without restricting it. The length and proportions should complement the wearer rather than simply follow a trend.

It also needs to work with what will actually be worn underneath it.

A jacket intended primarily for shirts may be approached differently from one a client plans to wear over knitwear. These are small considerations, but they are part of what makes bespoke tailoring personal.

Through fittings, these proportions can be refined until the jacket looks composed while still feeling easy to wear.

Building Beyond the First Jacket

Once the foundation is covered, sports jackets become an opportunity to introduce more personality into a wardrobe.

A subtle check can add interest while remaining versatile. Brown and green tones can complement an autumn wardrobe. Linen and lighter colours work naturally for summer. Richer textures can transform an otherwise simple combination of shirt and trousers.

Over time, the aim is not to collect jackets for the sake of having more clothes.

It is to build pieces that work together.

A thoughtful wardrobe allows one jacket to work with several trousers, shirts and shoes. Each new commission should add possibilities to what you already own rather than exist entirely on its own.

Beyond the Suit

A suit will always have its place. There are occasions where nothing else carries the same sense of purpose and presence.

But modern tailoring is no longer only about dressing formally.

It is about having the right clothes for the way you actually live.

For many men, the sports jacket becomes the bridge between formal tailoring and everyday dressing — refined enough when the occasion demands it, relaxed enough when it does not.

At Der Herr, we approach each sports jacket by first understanding the person who will wear it: their lifestyle, their existing wardrobe and how they want to feel in their clothes. From there, we can guide the choice of cloth, construction and details to create something that becomes genuinely useful.

Because ultimately, the best bespoke garments are not necessarily the ones reserved for the most important occasions.

They are the ones you find yourself reaching for again and again.
